The Grammy Awards Is Coming to Vegas

Known as the Grammy, the Grammy Awards is an award presented by the Recording Academy. It acknowledges the “Outstanding Achievement in the music industry”. As an American award, it takes into consideration the American music industry. The Grammys are in the top 3 American music awards, being the other 2, the Billboard Awards and the American Music Awards. And it is also part of the top 4 annual American entertainment awards, the EGOT. The acronym “EGOT” stands for the Emmy Awards, the Grammy, the Oscars, and the Tony.

The Origin

The Hollywood Walk Of Fame

In 1953 the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce had the idea of building a Walk of Fame. E.M. Stuart, responsible for the idea, said the walk was to “maintain the glory of a community whose name means glamor and excitement in the four corners of the world”. There was then a committee to decide the details of the landmark. During this period of planning, the committee came up with a list of significant people from the entertainment industry that deserved a spot on the Walk. However, They realized that many people from that list would never earn a star with their names. With that in mind, they decided to create an award like the Emmy or the Oscar. To decide the name they held a mail-in contest that resulted in almost 300 submissions of the name “Grammy” as a reference to the gramophone.

It was only in 1959 that the first ceremony happened. The event happened in two places at the same time. It happened at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, in California, and the Park Sheraton Hotel, in New York. Twenty-eight Grammys were awarded during the ceremony. This event did not have a television broadcast. It was only the second ceremony that happened a little later, still, in 1959, that was on TV. However, the event did not air live. The first Grammy Award to be live on television was the 13th ceremony, in 1971.

The Latin Grammy

With Latin music making its way into the American industry, the Latin Recording Academy understood the necessity of creating a separate award. And so in 2000, the Latin Grammy was in the Crypto.com Arena, (former Staple Center) in Los Angeles. The award had 39 categories and would take into consideration any song with at least 51% of its content in Spanish or Portuguese. Also, it has voting members from several regions in and out of the US, including Latin America and Iberia.

This year the Latin Grammys will be on November 17th. The ceremony will happen at the Michelob Ultra Arena, in Las Vegas and will count on the performances of Rauw Alejandro, Jesse & Joy, Sebastian Yatra, and Marco Antonio Solís.
