Fashion Extravaganza: Balenciaga

Balenciaga! Such a well-known name in the world of fashion. The Spanish brand has been the fastest-growing luxury brand over the past few years. Balenciaga is a luxury fashion house founded in Spain by Cristóbal Balenciaga. Pillow hats, sack dresses, and baby-doll dresses are a few of his creations that considerably impacted the fashion world. Let’s get to know more about it and understand the reason why it is so famous nowadays!

Who is Cristóbal Balenciaga?

Cristóbal Balenciaga, born on Jan. 21, 1895, in Guetaria, Spain, and died on March 23, 1972, in Valencia, was a Spanish dress designer who created elegant ball gowns and other classic designs. He also is the founder of the Balenciaga fashion house.

His mother, Martina Eizaguirre, was a seamstress for the Marchioness of Casa Torres, a highly elegant and socially prominent woman, who ended up to be one of Balenciaga’s earliest supporters. Cristóbal had his mother as a key figure throughout his life and she was the one who taught him to sew at the tender age of 11 years old.

At 12 he trained to learn his craft as a tailor and pattern cutter. His first trip to Paris at 15 inspired him to become a couturier. Before he opened his first boutique he was already rich in 20 years of experience.

Famous designers from all over the world recognized Cristóbal as a genius in his field. Coco Chanel said that he was ‘the only true couturier, others are just draftsmen’, and described him as; “a couturier in the truest sense of the word.” Meanwhile, Christian Dior said he was ‘the master of us all.’

Why is Balenciaga so Expensive?

You’ve probably wondered to yourself why brands like Balenciaga are so expensive. When you buy products from Balenciaga, you’re also paying for an “experience”, you want to experience luxury. Therefore, you pay for that feeling.

Balenciaga shoes and bags are some of the most unique and desirable items in the luxury industry. But, is desirability sufficient for a brand to make its products expensive? Is the quality to blame for such a huge price tag? Let’s check it out!

Celebrities love Balenciaga

Balenciaga has seen its fair share of celebrities, dressing some of the richest and most glamorous women of the 50s and 60s. In the early 2000s, the brand was well-known for being a favorite of supermodel Kate Moss. The brand has also dressed celebrities like Julianne Moore and Lady Gaga.

The brand’s biggest fans are the Kardashian clan – they also happen to be the most influential names in the world. If Kim Kardashian is seen in something, we too must have it, right?

Some examples of that can be seen when Caitlyn Jenner wore Balenciaga’s leather jacket in an episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians. Kanye West also wore many pieces from Balenciaga during his Saint Pablo Tour.

The brand also has strong ties to Hailey Bieber, Rihanna and thousands of Instagram influencers – No matter who you’re following, you probably can’t get away from seeing the brand being modeled. It’s all over social media!

Design, Quality, Materials

Balenciaga’s designs can only be described as truly Avante Garde. Their products have the best high-quality materials: leather, suede and fabric, silk, wool, and cashmere blend with the finest nature.

The Spanish luxury brand wants to deliver the very best products that make their consumers happy and satisfied. Their styles were pretty much overnight sensations, and have become part of the everyday life of any socialite worldwide.

Balenciaga products show that the brand uses the best craftsmanship. This gives a sense of luxury, exclusivity, and high status to their products.

You Pay For an Experience

Balenciaga shoes are pricey as they convey prestige. The value of luxury brands is their ability to create an experience that goes beyond the product. Products from Balenciaga show something about who you are and what you’re willing to spend your money on.

The Balenciaga Museum

Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum opened on 7 June 2011 in the town of Getaria (Spain), his hometown, and it is the first museum in the world dedicated exclusively to a designer. Its mission is to disseminate and highlight the importance of the figure and work of this brilliant designer, to raise awareness of the life and work of the great couturier and his significance in the history of fashion. The Museum is home to one of the most relevant collections of creations by Cristóbal Balenciaga at an international level and you can also find temporary exhibitions linked to fashion and educational and leisure activities.

The museum has about 1,200 pieces, among them several outfits that belonged to the Princess of Monaco, Grace Kelly. They are exhibited in a rotating manner, both for reasons of space and because the materials are fragile and would deteriorate in a continuous exhibition.

Important people such as Christian Dior, Givenchy, and Coco Chanel declared their admiration for Balenciaga. Some three hundred pieces were donated by Rachel L. Mellon, who was a prominent client of Balenciaga. In 2017 the museum dedicated a temporary exhibition to this donor. Other garments have been given in deposit by Hubert de Givenchy and by heirs of old clients such as Sonsoles de Icaza and Grace Kelly.

As we could see, Balenciaga is not only a brand but also a status and a way of living. Having its products means that you are paying for an experience, design, comfort, luxury, and, of course, the name.

Balenciaga is continuously reaching new heights of popularity. The brand represents modern streetwear and is a massive hit with Gen Z and Millenials. Their present-day designs keep attracting people from all over the world to wear and have their products no matter the price.
