Americans and Their Cars: A Love Story
How Much Americans Love their Cars
The post-World War II period saw the growth of the middle class in the United States. Many young couples were starting their families and moving to the suburbs. The newly shaped “American way of life” included the purchase of a car for the family. In that sense, American culture itself created the demand for the automobile industry to thrive.
The American passion for cars is so true today as it was in the late 1940s. But how deep is this love, for nowadays drivers? A national survey conducted by Cars.com shed some light on this phenomenon.
According to the survey, approximately three-quarters of Americans (73%) admitted loving their car a lot. A similar proportion (69% of respondents) claimed to have a significant amount of pride in their vehicle.
The survey revealed that some Americans can be more careful with their cars than with their own health. Sixty-three percent of respondents said that they service their car more often than they go to the dentist. More than half (57%) of respondents confess that they take their car to the shop more often than they go to the doctor’s office.
Furthermore, the survey reveals additional information on drivers around the country. More than two-thirds of Americans (68%) are not willing to allow their vehicle to be used for ride-sharing, and 37% of survey respondents wouldn’t even loan it to a friend or family member.
The American love for cars set the stage for great events to celebrate this passion. That created demand for the rise of car shows throughout the country. But what is the origin of car shows? What is in them that attracts such huge audiences?
When Did Car Shows Become Popular?
Car shows appeared not long after the invention of the automobile, in the late 1800s. Manufacturers and designers needed opportunities to promote their inventions. The future of the growing automobile industry was also to be approached in these events. Furthermore, those involved in the industry were eager to prove that the automobile was a viable means of transportation. Therefore, automotive shows proved to be the perfect platform for the promotion of automobiles.
The first modern automotive show in the United States happened at Madison Square Garden in New York City in 1900. It is called the grandmother of all auto shows. And the first major auto show was held in Chicago in 1901. This newspaper article from March 23, 1901, reports more than 6,000 people being invited for the opening ceremony. In the following years, many other car shows popped up throughout the country.
The 1930s and the 1940s saw a decline in interest in auto shows. This was due to the hardships of the Great Depression and the demands that World War II placed on manufacturers. As the world recovered from war, the dynamics of the automotive industry began to favor the comeback of car shows from 1949 onwards.
Car shows remained as an icon of American and international automotive culture up to the 2000s. Events saw the addition of exquisite displays and entertainment options for the whole family. These new elements added up to the excitement of new technologies in automobiles.
Automobile shows nowadays have become more and more specialized. Product demonstrations go hand-in-hand with an emphasis on entertainment. This turns auto shows into appealing recreation opportunities. There is no doubt that Vegas had to be among the American cities that host car shows. These events happen throughout the year and are great entertainment opportunities for car lovers.
There are many different kinds of events, each one to suit a specific audience. Like everything in Vegas, there is a fit for everyone. Whether you like to see cars speeding up or prefer to learn about new technology, there is a place for you.
