Can You Ski In Vegas?
The Winter Olympic Games made some winter sports become known worldwide. Unfortunately, many of them are considered dangerous and you need professional help with dedicated equipment. But, if you want to practice these sports just to try and have a good time, you should search for the places with the best weather conditions. What does that encompass? Can you ski in Vegas?
For those who enjoy traveling in winter and love sports, this is the season you can have loads of fun! Winter sports are certainly the main attractions of the season. You can, for example, feel the adrenaline of going down a mountain on skis or a snowboard. You can explore trails through forests during a hike with snowshoes. Also, you may opt for a more extreme snow sport like snowmobiling.
Check out some of the most interesting winter sports in the world!
Bobsleigh
Having been present at every game (except in Squaw Valley, 1960), bobsleigh is an iconic part of the Winter Olympics. The premiere took place with only the four-man race, and the 1932 games incorporated the two-man race. Women participated in the sport for the first time at the 2002 Salt Lake Olympic Games.
Teams of four (male) or two (female or male) athletes go down inside a cart on blades (a kind of sled) on a curvy ice track and straight lines of 1,500 meters. The bobsled reaches speeds of around 140km/h. Each team makes two to four runs. The team that completes the course in the shortest time wins. This is quite different, though, from traditional skiing. It still does not answer the question of whether or not you can ski in Vegas.
Curling
Curling is one of the most popular and curious practices among winter sports. It became part of the Olympic program only at the Nagano Games, in 1998. Previously, it appeared as a demonstration sport in the first edition of the competition, in Chamonix, in 1924. The International Curling Federation (WCF) was founded in 1966.
The game’s goal is to make granite boulders slide toward the given target, and players need to sweep the ice away. The granite stone weighs between 17 and 20 kg and has a circumference of 910 millimeters, in addition to a rod (handle) to facilitate handling. The track is 5 meters wide and 45 meters long. Whoever has the most points wins the match.
The sport was born in Scotland but is currently more practiced in countries like Canada. One interesting curiosity is that, because of its level of complexity, this winter sport is known as “chess on ice”. Would you try it? Or are you still reading to find out if you can ski in Vegas?
Snowboarding
Combining three different sports – skiing, skateboarding, and surfing –, snowboarding is another very popular winter sport. On a board, you can go down hills at full speed or risk some radical maneuvers in the snow. Just like skiing, the best way to learn to snowboard is to join a group class with qualified professionals.
The popularity achieved by snowboarding throughout the 1980s and early 1990s led the International Olympic Committee to enroll the sport in the Olympic program. Snowboarding debuted at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan.
Paralympic Snowboarding is an adapted version of snowboarding for athletes with disabilities. The modality was introduced at the Winter Paralympic Games as a competition e in Sochi, in 2014. In Pyeongchang, in 2018, however, it was played as a single sport, and there were a total of 10 competitions of this modality.
The Winter Olympics of 2022 and The United States of America
The 24th edition of the Winter Olympic Games took place in Beijing, and it featured many different sports — skating (which includes figure skating and speed skating), biathlon, skiing (which includes snowboarding and ski jumping), bobsled, luge, skeleton, curling, and ice hockey. Around 3,000 athletes from all over the world participated in the competition that had its ending on February 20th.
The United States was represented by 224 athletes, 116 men, and 108 women. The country won eight gold medals and 25 in total at the Games, finishing fourth overall. The highlights of this edition included Jessie Diggins who became the country’s first skier to win individual medals in cross-country skiing and the skater Nathan Chen, who broke the world record in the “short program” on the way to a gold medal in men’s singles.
Erin Jackson became the first black athlete to win gold in women’s speed skating (in the women’s 500m) and Chloe Kim defended her title in the women’s snowboard halfpipe. The snowboarder Lindsey Jacobellis was the only US athlete with multiple gold medals, winning the snowboard cross and sharing gold with her teammate Nick Baumgartner in the snowboard cross event for mixed teams.
