Pride Month Celebrations

Why Is June Pride Month?

The choice of the month was in honor of the Stonewall Uprising: the historic event that marked the start of the modern pride movement for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, intersex, and asexual rights (LGBTQIA+) across the globe.

Around the world, the LGBTQIA+ community and its supporters gather to celebrate pride in being a part of the movement. Additionally, Pride Month is an opportunity to raise awareness for challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community such as hate and violence.

Pride Parades Around The World 🌍

Although almost all major cities host pride events, some are worldly famous. Here you will find a comprehensive list of parades, all compiled by Seeker.io. Below are the most well-known:

🌈Copenhagen – the city is home to a week-long event called Copenhagen Pride. Differently from many others, the event takes place in August, and not June.

🌈Madrid – the Madrid Pride Parade is also a week-long event with concerts, art, parties, culture, and sport.

🌈New York City – in 2022, the New York City Pride Parade will be on June 27. The first pride march in the city was in 1970.

🌈Paris – the week of celebrations will be at Le Marais starting June 25. An extra tip for you: Disneyland Paris will be hosting a series of specials and events related to pride month, so make sure to have a look if heading to Paris.

🌈Berlin – Berlin Pride is one of the biggest pride events in Europe throughout the year. On June 24, the parade will be at major city spots. In the evening, a gigantic pride party will wrap up the celebrations.

How To Be an LGBTQIA+ Ally?

Anyone can be an ally to their friends, family, and co-workers that are part of the LGBTQIA+ community. However, sometimes being an outsider from the community is a barrier that may keep people from supporting the community.

In that sense, it is interesting to keep some basics in mind. For example, if you are aware of the correct use of pronouns at the start of the conversation, you might avoid any awkwardness that could get in the way of effective communication. It is also crucial to understand that you may be a cheerful supporter, but unless you are part of the LGBTQIA+ community, the real issues are not about you. Thus, the most important thing you can do is listen and empathize. When people take the time to share their stories, this is a precious moment that should be celebrated in the best way: listening.

#1 Use Appropriate Pronouns

How will I know what pronouns to use with someone? It’s that simple: just ask. And once you know which pronoun that person prefers to be called, stick to it and don’t fuss about it. This is not about you.

#2 Understand that this is not about you

If you choose to be an LGBTQIA+ ally, keep in mind that this is about this community. If

someone comes out to you, for example, it is not your place to share their story with someone else. This is their story to tell.

#3 Listen

Try to be understanding, even if it’s sometimes hard to relate. Members of the LGBT community face struggles that straight people may not have experienced. Show some empathy.

#4 Raise Your Voice Against Prejudice

Take the opportunity to try and educate others. If educating won’t work, be at least the one to point out that some things are not OK.

Las Vegas Pride

PRIDE Las Vegas is a non-profit organization founded on June 4, 1992. Since then, the organization has marked its presence with numerous events in the city. In early 2020, the horizon looked promising with the start of a new decade. However, as the covid-19 pandemic hit, it went through a difficult time with the cancellation of all events.

In September 2021, the charity received an unexpected grant from the state of Nevada. Fortunately, this was what saved the organization financially. In 2022, with virtually all covid-19 restrictions lifted in the state, PRIDE Las Vegas gets ready for a historical Pride Month.

You can expect everything and more from this exciting set of events. On the first week of June alone, PRIDE Las Vegas is having a family bingo, two pool parties (learn more about the Las Vegas Pool Party Scene), a basketball game, and a pageant. Check out the full schedule and more in their website.
